On 16th November, 1914, the1st Devonshire battalion of 14 Brigade, 3rd Division moved into trenches at Meteren, close to Bailleul, in France, where they remained until relieved on 28th November. The battalion diary entry for 23rd November, simply stated that it was a quiet day with nothing of note to record, not a sentiment with which Charles Newman, who was killed on that day, would have agreed. |
